Degas’s Little Dancer

PRESENTED IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE KENNEDY CENTER’S
WORLD-PREMIERE MUSICAL
“LITTLE DANCER”

An iconic work in the National Gallery of Art’s collection, Little Dancer Aged Fourteen takes center stage in Degas’s Little Dancer, a focus exhibition presented in conjunction with the world-premiere of the musical Little Dancer that will run from 25 October to 30 November 2014 at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts (Washington, DC).

The musical is inspired by Edgar Degas’s renowned original wax statuette of a young ballerina, which caused a sensation when it was first shown at the 1881 impressionist exhibition in Paris. The sculpture is one of the most popular works of art in the National Gallery of Art collection.

The National Gallery of Art has the third largest collection of Degas works in the world. Little Dancer Aged Fourteen will be presented with 11 additional paintings, prints, pastels, and sculptures that exemplify Degas’s fascination with the practice and performance of ballet, on view from 5 October 2014 to 11 January 2015 (click on "Press Images").
